Dereck "DJ" Starr lives in the Interior Alaska community of Huslia. He entered the sport of mushing through his father-in-law Fred Bifelt, who asked DJ to run his dogs while he was out of town. After that experience, he was hooked. He now belongs to Dakli Flats Kennels with 20 dogs, including Caymen, Diesel, Harmon, and Honey in leading positions, as well as up-and-coming leaders Cakes and Kaiser. He has run the Two Rivers 200, the Summit Quest 300 and the Kobuk 440, as well as sprint races in Hughes and Huslia. His sponsors are Alaska Native Renewable Industries, Huslia Tribal and City Councils, and the wonderful people of the Interior communities. He would like to thank everyone for their support and kind words.
