2021 Kobuk 440 guaranteed purse of $60,000
Attention Mushers: due to COVID-19, the Kobuk 440 Racing Association is in the process of developing COVID-19 policies alongside public health officials and local government entities. Please view the plan and timeline for the process here.
Changes to the entry process: There is a cap of 10 mushers from outside of the Northwest Arctic. We will use a waitlist for entries received after 10. We will not take entry fees until after the early entry deadline of March 18th.
The 2021 Race Rules will be made available along with the final COVID-19 Policies on Feb. 15. Our plan is subject to change at any time given the uncertainty of COVID-19. We appreciate your patience with the Racing Association as we navigate race planning and ensuring the safety of Northwest Arctic residents.
From the draft plan:
Mushers, race officials, and volunteers will be identified prior to the race and must provide proof of a negative result from a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the race OR proof of vaccination OR proof that you have recovered from COVID-19 within the last 90 days. Documentation can be emailed to email@example.com.
The Racing Association has changed their cap on musher entries to 10 mushers from outside of the Northwest Arctic. Individuals traveling from outside the Northwest Arctic for the race will be limited but will include: mushers, handlers, race officials, and veterinarians. All travelers must provide proof of a negative result from a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of travel OR proof of vaccination OR proof that you have recovered from COVID-19 within the last 90 days Upon arrival in Kotzebue each visitor may undergo additional tests in accordance with City of Kotzebue guidance. This policy is subject to change depending on the City of Kotzebue mandates at the time of the race.
If you feel ill or are experiencing symptoms consistent with Covid-19 we urge you to not travel to Kotzebue, even if you have a recent negative test.
Registration fees will be refunded for any musher who cannot race because of a positive test or because they have symptoms consistent with Covid-19.
Mushers will not be hosted by community members. Do not reach out to personal contacts for lodging as this presents the risk of COVID-19 spread to the community. Lodging will be arranged by the Racing Association as available. We will provide housing for one handler per musher. Racers and their handlers should expect to share a room. Please do not invite any additional family or friends to travel with you. Mushers are encouraged to bring your own food to limit your trips to the store.
Please contact any of the following carriers directly to book the flights to and from Kotzebue.
